BUILD will be hosting what we are calling the Summer of Opportunity. For most of us, summer is a time of fun in the sun and quality time with people we love. Sadly, for youth in many Chicago neighborhoods, summer means increased violence and lost opportunity, as learning and growth shut down simply to stay out of harm’s way. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Last year, BUILD and over 60 partners launched Austin Summer of Opportunity, a day-long festival that connected 3000 youth, family, and friends with a full summer of resources and opportunities – including employment, workforce training, education, and health & wellness programs. We kicked off the celebration with a parade, followed by stage performances, carnival rides, a basketball tournament, food, and activities for all ages.

Summer of Opportunity event will be held on August 17th and has already attracted interest from dozens of partners, this year’s celebration could be the West Side’s best public event ever! Sponsorship packages are available for all budgets, and provide a positive and visible way to support thousands of youth in Austin and surrounding areas. Whether a partner provides funding, volunteers, or other support, we hope they get involved.
BUILD is spearheading Summer of Opportunity because we have seen how celebration and collaboration can be powerful tools for building a community that cares for our youth. For nearly 50 years, BUILD has helped thousands of youth that others have gave up on transform their lives and reach their potential. Yet we are far from alone – Summer of Opportunity draws on the leadership of literally dozens of partners.
